If you are coming to a qualified TCM acupuncturist for the first time, these are the few things you may need to know.
1. Don’t scrape your tongue for a day or two if you are coming to see an acupuncturist, as the genuine appearance of the tongue with its coating is important to analyse the condition of your internal organs.
2. During the consultation, your practitioner may ask about your bowel movements and urination, so don’t forget to check how these look when you go to the toilet, their appearance, colour and smell. Try to keep track of how often you use the toilet.
3. Wear comfortable clothing. Depending on the point selection, simply rolling up your sleeves and trousers may be enough for your practitioner to access the points on your arms and legs. For abdominal or back treatments, removing them is usually quick and uncomplicated.
4. Avoid coming to your initial as well as follow-up appointments on an empty stomach or overly full. A light meal before treatment supports steady energy and comfort. Arrive hydrated or have some tea or water before your treatment.
5. The initial appointment typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on your health concerns. During this time, your practitioner will take a comprehensive case history to gain a clear understanding of your current condition. Please be ready to share your medical history and any present symptoms or concerns. If there is anything your practitioner does not ask about, feel free to mention it during the consultation. This ensures your treatment can be tailored precisely to your needs.
6. Feel free to ask about what to expect during or after the session, including any sensations you may experience.
7. Acupuncture involves the gentle placement of very fine needles, which may feel like a light pinch or nothing at all. Feeling relaxed can help enhance the effectiveness of your treatment.
